What is Ludo
The classic dice race you grew up with
Ludo is a race game for two to four players. Each player has four tokens, a die, and a corner of the board. Roll a 6 to bring a token out, chase the others around the shared track, capture anything you land on, and reach your home column by exact count. It is quick to learn and fully driven by luck and timing — no two games play the same.
- 1, 2, or 3 bots
- Race one rival head-to-head or take on the full four-player board. Bots roll instantly, so there is never a matchmaking wait.
- Plays in your browser
- No download, no install, no plugins. ludoclassic.app is ready the moment the page loads, on desktop and mobile.
- Fair, classic rules
- A 6 to start, extra rolls, captures, eight safe squares, and an exact roll to get home. The rules are listed in full on the how-to-play page.
- Progress saved locally
- Wins, win streak, captures, and best time for each bot setting are stored on your device — never on a server.
How to play
How to play Ludo
Ludo is a race of luck and timing. Roll a 6 to start, move clockwise around the board, capture rivals, and bring all four tokens home first.
- 1
Pick your opponents
You play Red against one, two, or three computer players. Each colour has four tokens waiting in its corner yard. The whole game is played on the classic cross-shaped board with a shared 52-square outer track.
- 2
Roll a 6 to start
Press Roll (or R). A token can only leave the yard on a 6, and it lands on your coloured start square. A 6 also earns another roll, but three sixes in a row forfeit the turn.
- 3
Race around the board
Move any one token by the number rolled, clockwise around the track. Land exactly on an opponent token to capture it and send it back to its yard, unless it is standing on a safe square. Captures earn an extra roll.
- 4
Get all four tokens home
After a full lap, tokens turn into their own coloured home column. You need the exact number to reach the centre. The first player to bring all four tokens home wins.
Tips to win more games
- Bring a second token out on a 6 when you can — a wider choice of moves is the strongest advantage in Ludo.
- Park on safe squares (start squares and stars) when an opponent token sits one to six squares behind you.
- Capture whenever it is safe to: it sets an opponent back many turns and gives you an extra roll.
- Do not run a single token far ahead alone; advanced tokens are the biggest loss when captured.
- Save exact-count moves for the home stretch: bring tokens to within six squares of home and wait for the right roll.
- A token in your home column can never be captured, so racing tokens into the column is often safer than waiting outside it.
- Watch the die: after a 6 you roll again, so plan the follow-up move before you commit the first.
FAQ
Ludo, answered
Straight answers about the free Ludo board game you can play online in your browser.
Is this Ludo game free to play?
Yes. ludoclassic.app is completely free. There is no download, no account, no in-game currency, and no paid tier — open the page and press Play.
Can I play Ludo online against the computer?
Yes. You play Red against one, two, or three computer opponents. There is no matchmaking wait — bots move instantly, so a game starts the moment you press Play.
Do I need a 6 to start?
Yes. A token can only leave the yard on a roll of 6, moving onto your start square. Any other roll with all tokens in the yard passes the turn.
What happens when I roll a 6?
You move (or bring out a token) and then roll again. Three sixes in a row forfeit the turn without moving, so a lucky streak has a limit.
How do captures and safe squares work?
If your token lands exactly on a square holding an opponent token, that token returns to its yard and you roll again. Tokens on the eight safe squares — the four start squares and the four star squares — cannot be captured, and neither can tokens in a home column.
Does my progress save?
Wins, win streaks, captures, and best times are saved in your browser on this device, tracked separately for one, two, and three bots. Nothing is sent to a server, so clearing site data resets it.
