Ludo Strategy & Tips
A practical Ludo strategy guide: get a second token out, stop on safe squares, capture the leader, spread risk, and time the exact roll home.
Play LudoThe core idea
Ludo is luck plus risk management
The die decides how far you move, but you choose which token moves. Strong Ludo play is about limiting what a single unlucky roll can cost you: keep several tokens in play, use safe squares, and never leave your best token exposed for long.
- 01
Get a second token out
When you roll a 6, bring out a new token unless a capture or a rescue is on. Having two or more tokens in play means every roll has a useful move and you are never forced to march a single token into danger.
- 02
Stop on safe squares
Start squares and star squares cannot be captured. If an opponent token sits one to six squares behind you, a safe square is the cheapest insurance in the game — use it and let them pass.
- 03
Check behind before you land
Before committing a move, look at the six squares behind your destination. Any opposing token there has roughly a one-in-six chance to hit you on its next roll, and more if several are close.
- 04
Capture the most advanced token
When you have a choice, capture the opponent token that has travelled furthest. It costs them the most turns to rebuild, and the capture also earns you an extra roll.
- 05
Do not sprint one token
A lone runner is easy to catch and expensive to lose. Advance several tokens together and keep the leader on safe squares or in the home column whenever you can.
- 06
Use the home column
Squares inside your coloured home column cannot be captured. Getting a token past the last track square is real progress, so favour moves that step inside instead of lingering just outside.
- 07
Plan the exact finish
A token needs the exact count to reach the centre. Park tokens within six squares of home only when another token can use the rolls that do not fit, so no turn is wasted.

How the approach shifts with more bots
The habits above apply everywhere. What changes is how crowded the board is — see the rules in the guide.
Against 1 bot
Fewer tokens on the board means fewer captures. A quick lead matters more, so bring tokens out fast and race for the home column.
Against 2 bots
Tokens cross paths often. Safe squares become a real tool, and hanging back behind a rival lets you capture instead of being captured.
Against 3 bots
The busiest board. Expect to be captured at least once, so protect your leading token and keep your others near safe squares.
