Answers for the Ludo board game

This FAQ is the long-form reference for ludoclassic.app: the free browser version of Ludo, the classic dice race board game. It covers how to start, how sixes and captures work, how the bots play, and why progress lives on your device.

For a full walkthrough of the rules, read how to play Ludo. For strategy, see the tips page. To play now, open the board.

Getting started

What this Ludo game is, what it costs, and how to begin.

Is this Ludo game free to play?

Yes. ludoclassic.app is completely free. There is no download, no account, no in-game currency, and no paid tier — open the page and press Play.

Can I play Ludo online against the computer?

Yes. You play Red against one, two, or three computer opponents. There is no matchmaking wait — bots move instantly, so a game starts the moment you press Play.

What is Ludo?

Ludo is a race board game for two to four players, descended from the ancient Indian game Pachisi. Each player has four tokens that travel around a cross-shaped board and into a home column. It was patented in England in 1896 as Ludo, Latin for "I play".

Can I play with friends on the same device?

Not yet. This version is a single-player game against bots. Local pass-and-play and online rooms are not included.

Rules

Sixes, captures, safe squares, and getting home.

Do I need a 6 to start?

Yes. A token can only leave the yard on a roll of 6, moving onto your start square. Any other roll with all tokens in the yard passes the turn.

What happens when I roll a 6?

You move (or bring out a token) and then roll again. Three sixes in a row forfeit the turn without moving, so a lucky streak has a limit.

How do captures and safe squares work?

If your token lands exactly on a square holding an opponent token, that token returns to its yard and you roll again. Tokens on the eight safe squares — the four start squares and the four star squares — cannot be captured, and neither can tokens in a home column.

Do I need an exact roll to finish?

Yes. A token must reach the centre by exact count. If the roll is too high for a token, that token cannot move. If no token can move, your turn passes.

Do two tokens on one square form a block?

No. Many house rules let stacked tokens form an uncapturable block, but this version keeps to the simplest ruleset: only the eight safe squares and the home column protect a token.

Which side do I play?

You always play Red, starting at the top-left of the board. Bots take Green, Yellow, and Blue. With one bot you race Yellow, sitting diagonally opposite.

Strategy and bots

How the computer opponents play and how to beat them.

How smart are the computer players?

They use a simple priority rule: finish a token if possible, otherwise capture, otherwise escape danger, otherwise bring a token out or advance one, with a little randomness so games vary. They are beatable and never see the die before it is rolled.

Is the die fair?

Yes. Every roll uses your browser's standard random number generator, giving each of the six faces an equal chance. Bots roll the same die as you with no hidden advantage.

What is the best strategy?

Keep more than one token in play, stop on safe squares when an opponent is close behind, capture when it is safe, and get tokens into the home column where they cannot be caught. See the tips page for a longer guide.

Devices and saves

Mobile play, controls, and where your progress lives.

Does my progress save?

Wins, win streaks, captures, and best times are saved in your browser on this device, tracked separately for one, two, and three bots. Nothing is sent to a server, so clearing site data resets it.

Can I play Ludo on my phone?

Yes. The board and Roll button fit on one phone screen. Tap Roll, then tap the highlighted token you want to move. It works in current versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge.

What are the keyboard controls?

R (or Space/Enter with the game focused) rolls the die, 1–4 choose a token, N starts a new game, and M mutes sound. You can also Tab to any control and press Enter.

How do I reset my stats?

Open Stats and press Reset progress, then confirm with a second tap. That clears wins, streaks, captures, and best times for every bot setting on this browser.

Still have a question?

Rules not listed here follow classic Ludo: a 6 to start, clockwise movement, captures on unsafe squares, and an exact roll to get home. For who publishes the game or a bug report, use About Us. Legal details are on Privacy and Terms.
